Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)Q: Can I be a member of SAI and another Sorority?
A: Yes. Sigma Alpha Iota is not a member of the Panhellenic Council. We have many sisters who are active members in both a Panhellenic sorority and Sigma Alpha Iota. Q: Why is Sigma Alpha Iota Considered a Fraternity? A: SAI was first established in 1903 as a sorority at the University School of Music in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1926, the SAI constitution was amended to designate it formally as a fraternity. The word "fraternity" stems from the Latin term "fraternitas" meaning "brotherhood" and can apply to both men's and women's organizations. Today, all Greek music organizations are termed fraternities, regardless of the gender of their members. Q: Do you have to be a music major to join? A: No. At Hampton University, we welcome anyone who has a sincere love for music. Q: Can Freshman join SAI? A: Freshman at Hampton University are not allowed to join any greek letter organization. In order to be eligible you must have completed 30 credit hours. |
